Kefir.AVI Here is a look at the kefir we made this week. This is a culture used for fermenting milk amongst other things. You get an end product much like drinking yogurt. We are still experimenting with it, but it is by far one of the best probiotics you can get. I know, I know there are many other very good probiotics and I dont want to argue which one is the best. I like kefir because it is easy to make and I can use cold raw milk to make it. Also it is surprisingly simple to make, just pop the grains(culture) into your milk. Let it stand for 24 hours. Strain the culture and drop it into the next batch of milk. Dink the end product flavour or unflavoured, or process it further into a type of cream cheese. First Fruit Tilapia Fry I could not understand why my fisk had stopped growing, then a few days ago I found the cause of the problem. Even though I baught only males, I now have a whole lot of fry(baby fish). When they start breeding their growth rate drops radically. Female tilapia holdthe eggs in their moth after they are fertilised, so the female basically can not eat until the fry are large enough to swim on their own. The males, even though they are able to eat also seemed to stop growing. This might be something else, but I am sure it is largely due to breeding. I moved the fry to a sepperate tank(basically a bucket with an airstone) so that they don't become fish food for the larger fish. I don't know if the larger tilapia will eat them. Also there is still one large goldfisk swimming arround which once again I don't know if it will eat the fry or not, but I am not taking any chances. Ultimate Organics We held fast to the belief that if you feed them they will come. So when our aquaponics system got INFESTED with aphids we did almost nothing. The only ''control'' measure we took was to place ''ant traps'' which is basically a syruppy substance laced with borax. the ants take this heavenly nectar into their nest and the rest of the colony feeds on it. slowly they start to die off from the borax which is poisonouse to ants. You have to get rid of the ants because they will protect the aphids from predators like ladybug grubs. Well this has paid off because today we not only found a ladybug but also a praying mantis which is something I have not see in the wild for many years. Praise Jesus, this works. ChickenInfirmary.AVI One of our chickens died yesterday. We have had a lot of rain the last couple of weeks and the chickens got wet. It turns out my mother-in-law was right (@#%$#^) all along. She kept telling us if they get wet they get sick and die(bird flu? Don't tell my neighbours). We thought ''don't be rediculouse that will never happen''. So much for us, I mean she has only raised, slaughtered, pluck, processed, packaged and sold hundreds of chickens, but what does she know, right?
