AADL is pleased to offer on-demand video of past library events and other AADL productions. AADL hosts gaming events, author talks, local celebrities and much more. You can find high quality and other downloads of events at http://aadl.org/video Five years ago, Michigan's corrections crisis became a major public policy issue. The prison population was growing rapidly, as were the costs to taxpayers. Thousands of prisoners were returning to their communities on parole after completing their sentences - with unacceptable and sometimes dangerous results: nearly half were back in prison within two years. Today, the Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative is transforming corrections practices and policies. Join us to learn more about this important topic for community discussion and involvement. A panel of returning citizens will speak about their experiences transitioning back into the community alongside MPRI professionals who will discuss the initiative and its many benefits. Among the panelists for this evening presentation will be Mary King, MPRI Community Coordinator for Washtenaw County.

On a bitterly cold morning in January 1963, Daisy Zick was brutally murdered in her Battle Creek home. No fewer than three witnesses caught a glimpse of the killer, yet today, it remains one of Michigan's most sensational unsolved crimes. The act of pure savagery rocked not only the community but also the Kellogg Company, where she worked. Join us as author Blaine Pardoe (recipient of the 2011 State History Award by the Historical Society of Michigan) discusses this shocking crime and his new book "Murder In Battle Creek: The Mysterious Death Of Daisy Zick." This event includes a book signing and books will be for sale. Blaine offers a new opportunity for readers to help solve this baffling case on its bicentennial. Who were the key suspects? What evidence do the police still have on this five-decades-old cold case? Just how close did this murder come to being solved? Is the killer still alive? These questions and more are masterfully brought to the forefront for true crime fans and armchair detectives. Blaine Pardoe is an award-winning author of numerous books in the science fiction, military nonfiction, true crime, paranormal and business management genres. Raised outside Battle Creek, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Central Michigan University. He has been a featured speaker at the U.S. National Archives, the United States Navy Museum and the New York Military Affairs Symposium. He currently resides in Virginia outside Washington, D.C.

With the support of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of volunteers dubbed the "Pit Crew," she hiked, stumbled, and sometimes crawled the rugged 2,181 mile Appalachian Trail in 46 days (an average of 47 miles per day), becoming the fastest person to hike the trail and the first woman to ever set the mark. But Jen's story is not about records or numbers; it's about endurance, faith, and most of all, love. Join us as Jennifer Pharr Davis (the 2012 National Geographic Adventurer Of The Year) discusses the many challenges and lessons that presented themselves along the trail of this difficult hike. Henry Ford was born the year of Gettysburg and died two years after the atomic bombs fell - and in that time become the most famous and richest man in America. Richard Snow, acclaimed popular historian and former editor-in-chief of American Heritage Magazine, will discuss Henry Ford and Snow's just-released (May 14) new book "I Invented The Modern Age: The Rise Of Henry Ford," a meticulous and entertaining account of Ford, the Model-T, and the remaking of American industry in the early 20th century. This special event will also include a book signing and books will be for sale. The car made Ford a national hero-- but that's not the end of the story. Ford was driven by a sense of messianic philanthropy, but once he'd achieved his goal he felt fettered by his very success. In Snow's capable hands, Ford is a tragic figure we watch rise and fall. Filled with scene and incident, character and dialogue, Snow's book presents us with the young, unknown, industrious, and altogether resourceful young man rising in the years when people were vying to build the machine that would define the dawning age in America. In many ways his story is well known, but Snow sheds new light onto this fascinating man by viewing him through his greatest creation-- the Model T. Richard Snow worked at American Heritage magazine for nearly four decades and was its editor-in-chief for seventeen years. The author of several books, Snow has also served as a consultant for historical motion pictures --among them "Glory" --and has written for documentaries, including the Burns brothers' "Civil War," and Ric Burns's award-winning PBS film "Coney Island," whose screenplay he wrote. Most recently, he served as a consultant on Ken Burns' World War II series, "The War."

Last summer a delegation of architects, urban planners, and interested citizens visited Tubingen, Germany to learn about Architecture and Sustainable Urban Development, in a trip co-sponsored by Huron Valley AIA and the Tubingen-Ann Arbor Sister City Partnership. Come see a presentation of trip highlights presented by some of the participants including: Janis Bobrin, Anne Cox, Celeste Novak and Grace Shackman. This event was originally scheduled for April, and had been postponed. Concepts noted included a well-defined and protected historic core complete with a pedestrian zone; sustainability requirements including green roofs and solar collection panels; and the adaptive reuse and infill housing of the building cooperatives. Side trips to Stuttgart and the Swabian Alps were also fun and instructive.

The P.L.A.Y. Project (Play & Language for Autistic Youngsters) is an evidence-based developmental intervention for families of young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Founded in 2001 by Richard Solomon, M.D. in response to the lack of intensive early intervention services for children with ASD, the P.L.A.Y. Project is a practical approach to autism intervention that has helped thousands of families in close to 30 states and seven countries. During this presentation geared to parents and professionals, Dr. Solomon will provide an overview of The P.L.A.Y. Project model, including video examples, and will answer questions. Richard Solomon, MD, has nearly 20 years of experience working with children with autistic spectrum disorders as a developmental and behavioral pediatrician. He is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Michigan and the Medical Director and founder of The Ann Arbor Center for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and The P.L.A.Y. Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters).

As summer draws to a close, children frequently experience a range of emotions about the upcoming challenges and opportunities associated with the start of the new school year. Feelings of excitement and anxiety are often intensified for children and families living with autism and other mental health issues. This presentation begins with an overview of common social, academic, and cognitive challenges experienced by children living with ASD and also includes a workshop format where parents and caregivers will have an opportunity to work through a method for specifying concerns, exploring coping strategies, and preparing their children for the start of the next school year. The speaker for this event (which is co-sponsored by the U-M Center For Human Adjustment) is Dr. Fiona Miller, a licensed clinical psychologist who directs the program in the diagnosis and treatment of ASD at the University Center for the Child and the Family (UCCF) in Ann Arbor.

In this fascinating book, world-renowned hot dog scholar Bruce Kraig investigates the history, people, decor, and venues that make up hot dog culture and what it says about our country. These humble sausages cross ethnic and regional boundaries and have provided the means for plucky entrepreneurs to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Hot dogs, and the ways we enjoy them, are part of the American dream. Bruce Kraig has loved hot dogs since his first bite at Nathan's when he was 5 years old. Since then he has studied hot dogs, and for over 25 years, has been the leading authority on the culture of Hot Dogs. As the authority on the culture, lore and history of hot dogs, he has appeared often in national media, including documentaries by the History Channel and the Discovery Channel. As the leading expert on hot dogs, Kraig has appeared on ABC Nightline, Martha Stewart Radio, ABC National News and NPR's Talk of the Nation, and in the spring of 2009, CBS News, WGN and NBC News Chicago, as well as BBC News and Radio New Zealand-all about hot dogs. Patty Carroll, currently Adjunct Full Professor of Photography at the School of The Art Institute Of Chicago and at Columbia College Chicago, is a distinguished photographic artist with a deep interest in American popular culture. She has published and exhibited widely on American cultural topics including Elvis Impersonators, American suburban lawns, and resorts at night, as well as hot dog stands. Her books include: "Living The Life: The World Of Elvis Tribute Artists," "Culture Is Everywhere" and her hot dog stand photos are included in "Changing Chicago."

Join us for an evening on engrossing and lively discussion as former Michigan Representative Lynn Rivers presents "The End Of The Constitution?" For this event, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Ann Arbor Area, Lynn Rivers will discuss issues such as government surveillance and search and seizure under the Patriot Act; detention of Americans without charges as authorized under the National Defense Authorization Act; national security letters, and government infiltration into religious and issue advocacy groups. She will also touch on separation of church and state, separation of powers, the Defense of Marriage Act and gay rights, and how the "parliamentary" behavior of Congress is hobbling the three branch system. Lynn Rivers was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representative from 1995 - 2003. She represented Michigan's 13th Congressional district (Eastern Washtenaw and Western Wayne counties). Prior to serving in Congress, she was a Michigan State Rep. She has an undergraduate degree from UM and a Law degree from Wayne State. She currently teaches Political Science at Washtenaw Community College and the University of Michigan.
