    The Life of the Mind

Philippians 4:2-9; Unity of individuals affects the ministry of the church. We need to submit under the Lordship of Jesus - it will allow us to agree and come together. Don't look at your circumstances for your joy; rather rejoice in the Lord always. Let people around you see that you can stand firm (in Christ) through the storm. We can do this because the Lord is at hand. We need to active control our thoughts because they will shape our life. He never said it would be easy but he is with us and will give us a peace that makes no sense according to the mind of the flesh.

    Stand Firm and Rejoice

Philippians 3:1-4:1; Jesus wants us to stand firm (4:1) and rejoicing in him (3:1). His means of us doing this are: trusting in his death and resurrection (not our own credentials), hoping in the power of his resurrection to give us boldness in suffering, striving because of our salvation not for salvation, imitating godly examples and having perspective on life (seeing the end of things, rather than the present comforts and cheap glories).

Philippians 2:19-30; Our lives should be worthy of the gospel, with our roots firmly in Jesus. It is important that Christian leaders are gospel guys not just good guys. Our unity should extend to warm-hearted gospel partnerships across boundaries of denomination, city, state and country. We need a balance between being rooted in one place and ministering there, and being mobile to be able to go where God directs.

Philippians 2:12-18; We are in salvation through faith but we need to work out our own salvation and see our life become more like Jesus. Because we have been forgiven we should work it out in our life and forgive others. The ability to do so is only possible because it is God who works in us. Getting on with others in the church (unity) is not just a personal issue but a gospel issue; it affects our witness to the community.

Philippians 2:1-11; We admire those who serve others sacrificially. We are called, as a church, to be of one mind striving side by side for the gospel. To do this we need humility. In Philippians 2 there is a command for humble unity. Jesus is our example of humility and we should have his mind among us. There is also an empowering outcome of humility; God has promised that we will share in Christ’s glory at the end. Don’t try in your own strength to be humble but look to Jesus and ask him to work in your life.

    The Living Word is Good

John 1:1-5; God’s word can feel constraining but it is because he is a good Dad. He wants to keep us safe; if he did not hold us we would fall. The written word points to the living Word. The living Word is the only way, light, life and answer in this dark world. Many people think they know Jesus but really they only know a pale imitation. If you really know Jesus it will (over time) change everything. Church is not a place for people who have got it right but rather for people who know they haven’t but do know the only one who does. God pours out his grace to us each day – grace upon grace – just as waves upon the shore it is constant. It is enough for each day as it comes. He always gives us sufficient grace for what we face.

    The Word is Good

    Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; John 15:9-17; Colossians 3:12-16; God ...

Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; John 15:9-17; Colossians 3:12-16; God is good - All the time! How is God's written word good? Because it leads us from lostness to salvation and then continues to mature us through teaching, admonishing and correction - revealing ways we need to change, shaping us for our own good. The word is good because it is breathed out by God. He chooses to reveal himself to us and communicate with us through scripture. As a church and individuals we need to let his word dwell in us richly, be willing to be taught and corrected, have scripture in authority and be willing to let those who are strong in one area help those who are weak.

Genesis 1:1; Genesis 3:1-3; James 1:16-17; Psalm 16:11; Creation points to the Creator. When we see something amazing we should not stop at 'isn't it lovely' but it should lead to 'God is so good'. Satan wants us to believe that God is not good. He focuses on what we don't have rather than on all the blessings God has given us. We need to turn to God, trusting in his goodness, even when we can't see it at work in the situation. God is good – All the time.

Philippians 1:12-18; The Philippians may have been concerned for Paul and his gospel ministry, but his imprisonment had advanced the gospel in two ways: 1. Paul had access to new people (the imperial guard), and 2. Others were bolder to preach (inspired by Paul's witness in prison and his perseverance in suffering). The gospel advances through suffering and we should value the gospel and the glory of Jesus more than our own comfort.
