Among Vultures - The fight to save Africa's valuable scavengers

Can the world live without vultures? Unfortunately, that's a question that must be asked in 2015, because in Europe, Africa and India, these carrion-eating birds of prey are dying out. 80 percent of vultures have disappeared from some areas of Africa alone. If that continues, an entire species that is enormously important for keeping ecosystems in balance will soon be lost. Vultures also fall victim to the rampant illegal hunting of elephants and rhinoceros. Circling vultures betray poaching activity to nature reserve rangers, so poachers lay poison bait to kill the birds. The company wants to expand the mines deep into Hambach forest. Environmental activists are holding their ground to halt those plans. They dig tunnel traps, chain themselves to trees, and sabotage diggers. They want to protect the forest and also question Germany's reliance on CO2-intensive brown coal for power generation.
